Onychomycosis or as its more commonly known as Fungal Nail is as the name suggests a fungal infection (mycosis) of the nail (onycho) it can affect both toenails and fingernails. The disease is mainly caused by dermatophytes such as Trichophyton Rubrum and Trichophyton Mentagrophytes, which together account for more than 93% of all infectious organisms involved in onychomycosis. These organisms feed on keratin, one of the nail components.
This is a very common foot complaint and it’s thought to affect up to 25% of the adult population at any one time.
This infection is an unsightly condition and can cause embarrassment for sufferers. It is a condition that does not resolve itself. Treatment such as Mycosan is necessary. Without treatment the infection can cause pain and generally become worse. It can cause the nail to crumble, spread to other areas of the nail/foot,possibly infecting other people. Patients with diabetes can develop complications.
How do you get Fungal Nail?
Other fungal infections such as athlete’s foot can also spread to the nail if not treated. You can also get it from swimming pools or gyms because of the humid environment where the organisms that can cause fungal nail live.
Having broken nails and/or having family members suffering with nail infections can also increase your chances of getting the infection.
